A wide range of Medical, Surgical, Rehabilitation, Hostel, Nursing Home, Allied Health and Outreach services are provided to a population of 17,000 in the Shire of Mount Alexander.

Assessment, Rehabilitation and Allied Health services are also provided to the neighbouring Shires of Central Goldfields and Macedon Ranges reaching a combined population of over 60,000.

A collaborative approach to developing effective discharge procedures, maternity enhancement and clinical pathways has culminated in financial reimbursements and grants to Mt. Alexander Hospital to further develop these strategies.

Mt Alexander Hospital is accredited with the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards EQUIP and Commonwealth Aged Care Residential Services Accreditation Program.

Location

Castlemaine is located in Central Victoria 120 kilometres or a 90 minute drive from the centre of Melbourne. Bendigo is only a 25 minute drive and trains run several times daily to both cities. Ballarat is a 50 minute drive and is connected by a daily bus service.

5 General Practices are located in the town with 19 General Practitioners providing medical services to the community and the hospital.

Nine primary schools and a Secondary college operate within the Shire. Alternatives include a Christian College, Steiner School and daily buses to a number of Bendigo schools.

Castlemaine also has an excellent Full Day Child Care Centre, Family Day Care Program and After School Child Care Program.
